Why this answer

Rules we check, and what we don't

We check: FAA airspace and airport permission zones, temporary no-fly zones, Giants home games, SF city parks, the Presidio, the national park land (Ocean Beach, Crissy Field, Alcatraz and more), Candlestick, jails, the Golden Gate Bridge, buildings and hills, wind and battery.

We don't check: private property, other people's privacy, filming permits. Port of SF property is noted (not checked) when an end is on a known Port site. Rules change — the dates below are when we last read each source.

Technical details

For experts: heights above sea level, airspace codes, data sources and timestamps, the full height chart.

All checks

Can you fly here?

Clear of terrain and buildings, and under 400 ft?

Is the weather and light OK?

Can your drone do it?

Can you keep it in view?

  • [x] Show the numbered waypoints on the map (off by default — the numbered moments mark the flight)

This route may go out of your sight — you must stay able to see it yourself, unaided (cameras, FPV goggles and binoculars don't count); beyond that needs an FAA waiver.

1 · Basics

Name (required) Names your drone in the picker, the report and share links.Any name you like. Airframe Multirotors carry payload on the battery; wings carry it on lift — the payload estimate changes.Spinning lift only (multirotor), lift plus a wing (VTOL hybrid), or wing only (fixed-wing). Takeoff weight (kg)Used to shorten flight time when you carry a payload, and for the 55 lb Part 107 limit. On DJI spec pages: “Takeoff Weight”. Max takeoff weight, MTOW (kg)Recorded with your specs; must be at least the takeoff weight. On spec pages: “Max Takeoff Weight” — mostly enterprise models.

2 · Battery and endurance

Battery (Wh)The energy budget the route is priced against. On the battery or spec page — or give volts × amp-hours instead. Max flight time (min)The time budget for the whole flight, derated for real-world conditions.Spec page: “Max Flight Time”. Battery volts (V)Multiplied by amp-hours into watt-hours (Wh = V × Ah).Printed on the battery label. Amp-hours (Ah)Multiplied by volts into watt-hours (Wh = V × Ah).Printed on the battery label (mAh ÷ 1000 = Ah). …flight time quoted at (m/s)Recorded — the speed the maker's flight-time figure was measured at.In the fine print under “Max Flight Time” (e.g. “measured at 21.6 kph”). Max hover time (min)Recorded — the no-wind ceiling for holding position.Spec page: “Max Hovering Time”.

3 · Speeds and limits

Cruise speed (m/s)The planning speed — every leg is priced at this.Rarely published; use a speed you actually fly. Max horizontal speed (m/s)The ceiling for holding track in wind; a leg needing more fails.Spec page: “Max Speed” (usually sport mode). Max climb speed (m/s)Used to plan gradual climbs.Spec page: “Max Ascent Speed”. Max descent speed (m/s)Used to plan gradual descents.Spec page: “Max Descent Speed”. Max wind resistance (m/s)The route fails when the forecast wind beats this.Spec page: “Max Wind Resistance”. Max payload (kg)Unlocks the payload question and joins the takeoff-weight check.Spec page: “Max Payload” (rare on camera drones).

4 · Environment and compliance

Operating temperature, min (°C)Recorded — outside this range the battery figures stop being honest.Spec page: “Operating Temperature”. Operating temperature, max (°C)Recorded — outside this range the battery figures stop being honest.Spec page: “Operating Temperature”. IP rating (or “none”) Recorded — your rain and dust limit.Spec page: “Ingress Protection”; write “none” if not listed. Remote ID Every Part 107 drone must broadcast Remote ID — “None” is a NO-GO.The maker's Remote ID declaration; the FAA keeps a list (uasdoc.faa.gov).

Advanced (optional)

Recorded with your specs — not used by the checks today.

Stall speed (m/s)Recorded (fixed-wing) — below this the wing stops flying.Flight manual; rarely on spec pages. Min turn radius (m)Recorded — how tight a circle it can fly.Flight manual; rarely on spec pages. Transition time (s)Recorded (VTOL) — time to switch between hover and wing flight.Flight manual; rarely on spec pages. Measured average power (W)Recorded — the average draw, if you've logged it.From your own flight logs; never on spec pages. Positioning / hover accuracy Recorded — how precisely it holds position.Spec page: “Hovering Accuracy” or “Positioning”.

Blank fields are fine — the app tells you what it couldn't check and never guesses. Wh is computed when volts + amp-hours are given (Wh = V × Ah). At least one energy figure (Wh, V + Ah, or flight time) is required.

About Dovepass

How Dovepass was built: the data, what broke and the trade-offs

About the data

  • Buildings: full-city OpenStreetMap extract via QLever (ODbL) + DataSF 2010 LIDAR gap-fill (PDDL), refreshed 2026-09-30.
  • Terrain: USGS 3DEP 1/3″ elevation model, 10 m tiles (public domain), with the government live elevation service as a cross-check monitor.
  • Airspace and stadiums: daily mirror of the FAA UAS Facility Map, Class Airspace and Stadiums layers; the report shows the mirror date.
  • Temporary restrictions: daily mirror of tfr.faa.gov (always confirm there before flying).
  • Weather: KSFO METAR mirror (NWS Aviation Weather Center); wind forecast from Open-Meteo at 80/120/180 m (CC-BY 4.0, non-commercial).
  • Park rules: SF Rec & Park + GGNRA + Presidio Trust mirrors, with the rule text and dates on the report.
  • Base map © OpenStreetMap contributors, served by OpenFreeMap. Geocoding: Nominatim.

Not checked by Dovepass

  • Live air traffic (helicopters along the waterfront, other drones) — not monitored; keep watching the sky.
  • Rain, fog and temperature along the route — the weather check reads one SFO station report; conditions on your street can differ.
  • Property-owner permission for takeoff and landing beyond the parks we check — ask the owner. Port of SF property (the piers, the Ferry Building, the waterfront): we NOTE it when an end is on a known Port site, but the Port's full property map is not machine-readable, so other Port land is not outlined.
  • Cranes and new construction — building data is a snapshot; very new structures may be missing.

Terms and privacy, in short

  • Answers follow Part 107 (licensed) rules. The FAA's recreational exception (a drone under 250 g flown just for fun needs no registration or Remote ID) is not modelled — the Remote ID answer says when that applies.
  • Line of sight means your own unaided sight (§107.31): cameras, FPV goggles and binoculars don't count. A visual observer may watch, but never extends how far you may fly. The sight distances in Trip options are guidance from vision research, not a legal limit.
  • Dovepass is a research prototype. An answer here is not a flight authorization and never replaces your own checks. You are the pilot in command: every flight is your responsibility, and the rules that count are the ones in force when you fly.
  • We use the data sources listed above, refreshed as noted (daily for airspace, restrictions and weather; snapshots for buildings and terrain). Any of it can be wrong or out of date — always confirm with the FAA and the land owner before you fly.
  • Feedback goes to a Google Form (Google stores the answers). We attach a link to the trip you checked; nothing else is collected. No tracking.
