Archive.today links going forward
It was discovered by a member of the mod team today that an article archived by archive.today had injected malware links into the archived article. This is obviously a problem. To protect members of the community we will be automatically removing posts using this archival service with automoderator. A message will be posted to the thread informing the poster of the reason.
In the future if we get clarity on why this is happening we may re-evaluate. In the meantime other archive sites are fine to submit as usual. If we find this is occurring on other sites we will expand the block list.
We have found some discussion about this elsewhere going back several weeks, we aren't going to remove every archive.today link from the sub, but we strongly suggest caution if you open and read those links. If you find malware in them, please send us mod mail.
As always,
-- the r/seattle mod team

What archive alternatives are safe and trusted, anyone know? Preferably one that is audited frequently.

Please ask Sara Nelson to have her friend vibecode one for the public good.
I'm even okay if there's like a sticky blurb of "Sara Nelson Facts" on each article.

Ok I'm not in the loop on this one, but I wish I was. What has she done this time?

~~Ghostarchive.org is good for some stuff, but I haven't had it work for Seattle Times recently. I'm also looking for an alternative~~
Edit: Maybe not? See link below

Per the datahoarder thread and blog post, ghostarchive is likely the creation of the archive . today admin and is being pushed by their sock puppet.

All of the iterations are covered. As you maybe found out when you got the message from automod.

Your submission has been removed because it includes a link to the archive.today network.
We allow archival links, but this particular provider has become unsafe because it has started including links to malware. Please use the original source or a different archival service.

Geez, that's a bummer. Archive.today was always my go-to for paywalled stuff from the Times. Guess I'll have to find another one that works same way.

Seattle Public Library provides free access to the Seattle Times!

what service / detection system flagged it as malware?
it may have been a false positive, a lot of "malware" domain lists also contain piracy websites, and some of them get overzealous and include paywall-bypass sites because they're "piracy related"

It wasn't flagged by a service. Multiple mods were sent to a malware site. One of them is in the cyber security business. We've done the whole thing here.

oh hell yeah that's the good shit. very considerate of them to include instructions on opening the terminal so even grandma can paste in the sketchy curl | sudo bash command.

Yikes!
There was some controversy earlier when the dev behind archive today (etc) edited previously archived sources while also launching a ddos campaign against a blogger who had written about the site.
https://www.reddit.com/r/DataHoarder/s/fdl6Ay3Bt4
ETA: here's an archive.org (unrelated to .today or any of .today's related domains) link to the site that was ddos'd archive today is running a ddos attack against my blog
edit: to make sure I don't accidentally link there

Damn, archive was clutch.
Out of curiosity, for articles are we allowed to copy and paste the entire article in a comment?
So for example:
Post and post title of a Seattle Times article
Comment containing the full article

I think I heard on another sub that this archive site is hosted in Russia, and I think it was already banned in some other places for that reason.

Thank you for all you do, mods. Can't be easy. Much appreciated.

Can anyone tell me how to detect the malware?

How to safely use archive.today
Archive.today can be useful, but recent Reddit discussions show real safety and reliability issues so use it with caution and prefer safer alternatives.
Latest safety concerns (Oct 28, 2026)
- Malware or injected links found in archived pages. "an article archived by archive.today had injected malware links into the archived article."
- Service owner alleged to be injecting code that causes DDoS-like requests. "Archive Today has added a DDoS command on to their captcha page to target a blog hoster the owner of archive today doesn't like."
- Site intermittency and redirects to spammy or ad sites reported. "When I try to access Archive today it redirects me to gullible-thanks dot com, which redirects me to either a random ad website"
Practical safety steps
- Avoid clicking unknown external links inside archived pages. "an article archived by archive.today had injected malware links into the archived article."
- Use a browser profile with extensions and strict blocking (uBlock/NoScript) or open in a VM. "Try Firefox. It worked there for me."
- Prefer loading archives on a phone or sandboxed environment if you must view them. "it works on my phone for a bit but no matter what on my computers it doesn't."
Safer alternatives and archiving habits
- Use well-audited services like Internet Archive / Perma.cc when possible. "I really like https://perma.cc/ (created by the Harvard Library Innovation Lab)"
- Save pages locally (SingleFile) or keep your own snapshots rather than relying on a single third-party archive. "You can save a webpage as an html file and add a prove that this page exists to a blockchain or something (you need to opt-in somehow) using an extension called SingleFile."
- If preserving article text is the goal, consider scraping just the article body rather than using archive.today. "the bigger question is whether you need the full rendered page or just the article text"
How to check files or pages you downloaded
- Scan downloads with VirusTotal and an up-to-date AV before opening. "You can also drop the file on
virustotal dot com/gui/home/upload"
- Trust but verify: many users report archive services are usually fine, but vigilance is needed. "It is extremely safe. Just run something to detect viruses if you are stressed."
- Report malicious content to moderators or the archive service and stop using that mirror. "we will be automatically removing posts using this archival service with automoderator."
Archive.today has had growing reports of malicious behavior, altered snapshots, and reliability problems through 2026, so avoid relying on it for critical preservation. Use safer archives, save local copies, sandbox any archived pages you must open, and scan downloads before opening them.
